" Return to WhereCampPDX 2009 sessions"
"

Present your favorite strange map and why you like it. Proposed by Igal Koshevoy.

This fun session was part presentation, part group discussion, and part show-and-tell. The moderator presented some maps that showcased funny, frightening, niche and bizarre uses of cartography. The rest of the time was spent by the group discussing these and sharing additional strange maps suggested by the session participants.

Discuss proposed changes to Calagator (an open source community calendar) so it can support content in multiple regions properly, so one website could effectively offer events in any area. Proposed changes include the ability to browse, search and get feed listings for events and venues based on location and range. We'd like to hear suggestions about how to best do this in terms of backend implementation, frontend interface, and content management so we ca…

WhereCampPDX is a free, annual unconference for geo-technology professionals and enthusiasts. The 2009 event will take place October 2nd-4th, with the main unconference session portion happening October 3rd at Metro Regional Center (600 NE Grand, Portland, OR). Unconference sessions are determined the day of the event, by the participants, allowing the most relevant and emergent topics to surface.
Getting lost in the woods is dangerous, so keen navigational skills are a must. Getting lost in the city is a fun way to gain new perspectives on where and how we live*. Join us Sunday for a fun self-lead excursion around Portland. A bare bones topographic map and clever clues will lead you around town on a scenic journey. Plan on committing 2 to 3 hours for this activity. It is recommended to team up in groups of 2 to 4.

Was: Cartographic Standards. This session used the International Standards for Orienteering Mapping as a jumping off point for discussing mapping standards and how or why they are useful. In looking at a variety of printed maps, we discussed the interesting adherence to the standards as well as the subtleties in the styles. It's obvious that both professionals and armchair cartographers are capable of creating works of art.

However, it was also noted that for all of the subtleties within each map, there are obvious styles that lead to influence and interpretation.
